Happy Hallowersary!

TomTato plant You say po-tay-toe; I say po-tah-toe. You say to-may-toe; I say to-mah-toe. You say Happy Halloween and I say Happy Anniversary! Why? Because it is Memee’s Musings first year anniversary! Yay to me for making it this far, right?!

Sometimes merging two things into one can be very cool. I think it is cool that my blogging anniversary is on Halloween. Do you know what else is cool? The TomTato plant AKA Ketchup ‘n’ Fries™ plant. That’s right, if you’ve never heard about it before you’re hearing it here. Tomatoes and potatoes growing from the same bush.

But enough about that frankenfurter monster, more about Memee! I always enjoy Halloween. I think it is because kids and adults alike get to dress up and pretend to be someone else and just hang out together without the restrictions of age getting between us as we eat silly spooky foods and play competitive games together at Halloween parties. Or at least that’s what our family does each year.

This year I am missing our annual party and all of my friends because I moved away from my group. But, never fear, I enjoyed 2 Halloween parties down here in my new stomping grounds.

Anyway, I wanted to say thank you to all of my Minions, old and new, who continue to stop by and read, like, encourage and comment on my thoughts. The world is not so lonely when bloggers around the world stop by to read and visit.

I have come far from the beginning when I started this as a means of overcoming personal tragedy. I am stronger and healthier now then I was a year ago and you all helped me to get here. If I hadn’t of started this blog I don’t know what direction my life would have taken. I cannot say my blog has gotten better with time, in fact I know I am not writing as consistently as I was last year and I don’t really think my thoughts are as deep or compelling as they were in 2014, but I’m still having fun and chug-chug-chugging along with it.

I imagine blogging is like being in a relationship, it has its ups and downs. I’ve made it through year one. Now, on to year two! My personal favorites about my blog are the poetry linky parties I put on each month and then when I have the inspiration a little bit of flash fiction emerges (and all of my stories thrill me to no end!)

I hope you’ll imbibe in a little story reading and join my poetry parties each month. I am trying to grow it. It is slow going, but it means a lot to me and I work hard to make it happen. My goal is to grow the challenge to 100 participants. When that happens there will be tangible prizes for the winners along with what they’re already receiving. So join us or send the the link: “memeesmusings.com/category/current-party”* to your poetry-writing friends! We’ll mark it down as your anniversary present to me! Yeah, I like that!

*If the links says nothing found, it just means the party is not active at that time. The link is good, but if you’ve missed the party, well then, you missed the party and will have to try again the following month. Please, do return. Parties are mid to end month lasting more than a week.

Lions and Tigers and Bears… Oh My!

Lions and Tigers and Bears... It's Halloween! |Memee's Musings

Tomorrow is the big day we’ve all been leading up to, the most playful of all American holidays: Halloween! Did you carve your pumpkins and put them outside your door? If yes, did you take a picture and submit it to social media? And if yes, did you post a link to it on Memee’s Doorstep Pumpkin Challenge and/or tag it #DoorstepPumpkinChallenge? If no, well, there’s no time like the present because you are almost out of time! Weren’t you listening? Halloween is less than a day away! BTW, even I was able to carve my pumpkin despite the broken elbow. It turns out those silly 99-cent pumpkin carving tools really, really work!

Do you have a costume for each of your children… the human and furry ones? How about yourself? Creating a costume and dressing up is at least half of the fun. If you’re a last minute costume preparer, make time to do it today! I’d love to see my minions all dressed up in my comment section. Show me your alter egos! And, don’t worry, if you don’t have the funds you may be able to put something together like the best costume I ever saw… White Trash. I was at a Halloween party and she had a dirty white robe and slippers, messy hair (though you could do those vintage pink curlers!), bright pink, smeared lipstick, a lipstick stained (doesn’t have to be the same color, in fact better if it’s not) crunched-up bent and broken cigarette in her hands, some toilet paper dangling from her slipper and white plastic trash bags attached all over her robe. She looked like she’d literally rolled out from behind a dumpster of a 70s trailer park!

Did you buy enough candy? That’s important. You don’t want to be the one on your block with the T-P’d lawn in the morning. It’s a time-consuming clean up.

I am excited about the trick-or-treaters coming. This is the first year in 19 years I have lived in a neighborhood where I expect to see children, pets, and parents prowling the streets. I can hardly wait for tomorrow night!

Oh, and lastly, after all the spooky chaos of the evening don’t forget to set your clock back an hour! November 1st will be a whole new time zone!

Be safe, have fun, and watch out for those zombies… even the smallest ones can convert you!

She Knocked Three Times (a fairytale)

She Knocked Three Times | Memee's Musings
Magic Brew by Loopy Dave

It was a Wednesday, the day I usually set aside for laundry. I had just finished steeping my tea and sat down to go over my assignment list for the upcoming week. With the whirling noise of the washer on spin cycle soothing my senses and the wafting smell of peppermint rising from my teacup I began to unwind and relax. I sighed a long sigh of comfort in knowing that all was as it should be when suddenly I heard three loud thumps coming from the laundry room.

I had not remembered putting shoes in the dryer though I suppose it was entirely possible as I do tend to daydream while sorting the dirty clothes and loading the washer. I got up and went to the laundry room feeling annoyed at myself for not inserting the shoe rack into the dryer. As I approached the room I realized the banging had stopped, but how could that be? Doorstep Pumpkin Challenge!

Doorstep Pumpkin Challenge! | Memee's Musings

We love Halloween! Candy, Costumes, and Carvings (parties, pranks, and pumpkins) what’s not to love?

I recently moved in with a family so that I could nanny for them while I am studying for my degree. Their favorite television shows all rotate around cooking, while I prefer the remodeling shows. Funny, because you couldn’t have paid me to watch This Old House, which by the way is in its 35th season! I guess Pinterest is to blame for my desire to learn all I can about DIY home improvement despite my not having a home.  I do however have a lot of home decorations I like to put out for holidays. For example I like to change my welcome mat with each season or holiday.

Speaking of welcoming people, what welcomes people at Halloween better than hand-carved pumpkins?  What with my broken elbow I won’t be doing any carving myself this year. And so I challenge all of Memee’s Minion Army to pick up the slack, and carve pumpkins — maybe one for me even — and pingback your creations to this article so that I can enjoy your work and reward one lucky minion with a super special trickertreat’n surprise!

Oh, and to get you in the mood, you might watch The Food Networks TV show which I do enjoy Halloween Wars, newly discovered by me but currently in its 5th season. The only show on television where a cake master, a candymaker, and a pumpkin carver come together with silly team names to create masterful edible Halloween masterpieces.
