Hugs

Well it is Words Crush Wednesday once again and I spent all day crippled in my own sadness, griped by my own, self-made fears.  I received many virtual hugs today and it got me going again. But lets be real, there is nothing like the real deal.

And when you are getting a true, sincere hug. You know it. You can feel it kiss your soul.

Hugs for happiness

I have actually written about hugs before and I am sure this won’t be the last time. If you love hugs and want to read more about them, you can read my previous post by clicking on this link:  Hugs, Hugs, and More Hugs!

P.S. Today is NOT National Hug Day. But being it’s an annual thing I figured I’d tag it so it’s lumped on that page. Thanks for understanding!>

It’s Not Bowie!

Aargh

I find it fascinating and honestly, a bit frustrating, annoying(?), that everyone is attributing this quote to David Bowie. He didn’t create it. He wasn’t even the first to sing it. David Bowie was only one of more than a dozen covers.

Nature Boy was first recorded in 1947 by Nat King Cole. And he didn’t write it either. The lyrics were gifted to him by a stranger. But before it could be released to the public the songwriter had to be tracked down. His name was Eden Ahbez. And in 1948 the words “The Greatest Thing You’ll Ever Learn Is Just To Love And Be Loved In Return,” were heard for the first time.

Still, David Bowie is an important part of American iconology. I am just wishing people were remembering him for his own glorious creations (for me — being more movie oriented than music oriented, it is his turn as Jareth the Goblin King in 1986’s Labyrinth film.)

Please enjoy the videos (it took a long time to gather them up for you!)

This is the writer singing the song, probably some time after it became “known.”:

Nat King Cole recorded 1947, released 1948

Dick Haymes, 1948

Frank Sinatra, 1948

Sarah Vaughan, 1948

Peggy Lee, 1948

Bobby Darin, 1961

Grace Slick and the Great Society, 1965

Ella Fitzgerald, 1976

George Benson, 1977

Etta Jones, 1979

Natalie Cole, 1991

Abbey Lincoln, 1995

Cher, 1998

David Bowie & Massive Attack, 2001

Aaron Neville, 2003

Harry Connick Jr., 2003

Celine Dion, 2004

Casey Abrams (American Idol TV) 2011

Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett, 2014

And there are, in the age of YouTube, so many more! Find your favorite and support the artist. Shop at iTunes or Vevo or from personal websites. Most independant artists on YouTube do have their covers available for sale and still others are just trying to get their voice out there and will give you a copy, just give them the feedback, they’ll respond!  Next week I’ll go back to normal #WCW programing.

Happy New Year!

Well, here we are just a day away from completing the first week of this new year, 2016! So far I’d say my year is working out pretty well. I really hope yours is as well.

Words Crush Wednesday is still on the menu for 2016 and with this first Wednesday of the year I give a quote by American country singer, Brad Paisley:

Brad Paisley quote

It does not matter that today is not January first. Each day is a new day and can be the beginning of a new 365-day cycle. So make the most of it and always try to create the best regardless of the circumstances surrounding you.

This Month on GoFundMe: Mental Health

quote-on-stigma-health-57-healthyplace
I do not know if you are aware but I have a link here on Memee’s Musings called This Month on GoFundMe, it is listed in the sidebar under Linky-Dinks Blogroll. Every month or so I feature a different Go Fund Me crowdfunding cause, always something or someone that I personally find worthy. Sometimes they are people I know and sometimes they are not.

This month I decided to highlight a young woman who is part of a social group that I am in. I have not yet met Lourdes yet personally though my online interactions with her have always been nothing short of sweet, kind, and respectful. I like her.

So when I learned recently that she had been hospitalized and diagnosed with a mental health disorder my heart went out to her. I carry a stigma too. It is not an easy life, living with mental illness. I stumbled upon her GoFundMe post yesterday asking for help during this transition period. She has been placed on unpaid medical leave at her job and thus her income and medical insurance are instantly gone, but still must pay her housing costs as we all do. And so she has become this month’s GoFundMe cause. Please read Lourde’s story here.

#WCW Racial Diversity

I am so saddened by everything happening in the world. It seems from where I sit (please excuse my blessed American standpoint) that ever since the World Trade Center bombings the entire world has gone to hell in a handbasket.

I imagine however, that that is only when we (or I) poked my head out of the sand and truly began paying attention to everything happening in the world.

Anyway, many of you know where I stand on this world crash course we seem to be upon. Despite that viewpoint, I want to say that I am extremely disappointed by every American who is allowing their fear to turn to hate.

Let the refugees in!

Treat them with dignity and respect!

Allow them a chance for life, the kind of life you were blessed to be born into.

Join me in playing Words Crush Wednesday (every Wednesday or whichever Wednesday you wish to).  Go HERE for the rules and to grab the badge.

I want this point to get across so this week I am not placing the badge. Sometimes WordPress Reader grabs the wrong image and I don’t want to risk it with this post. The message is far too important.

#WCW Hook ’em with a quote

“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.”
― Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

It is Words Crush Wednesday once again and I find myself busy with the Writing 101 course that is put out by Blogging U.  So last week when I saw that one of our assignments was to “Hook ’em with a quote” I knew immediately I’d be putting that assignment on hold until now.

The quote I have chosen jumped out at me as

  1. Fun
  2. Relevant
  3. Timely

And here’s why:  I had just moments before been reading through my classmates submissions for the day and ran across Jim’s post entitled, “Writing 101, Catching Up, Day 3 and Day 4.” Like Jim, I didn’t get started on my assignments on Day One, however I feel no rush to “catch up” with my peers.  I have been doing the assignments out of order when they appeal or inspire me.  I have always wanted to do things my way.  A scrapbooking class?  You bet, I’m there; can’t wait!  Thanks for the materials… Ah look, how cute, you all did the exact same page!  Nope, not me.  I gotta be uniquely me.  My vocation requires strict adherence to guidelines and deadlines so when it comes to my avocations I just gotta let my hair down and swing from the trees like Jane.

Woosh!

#WCW…Who’s Confused?

#WCW... Who's Confused? | Memee's Musings

Confusion. It is such a part of our everyday lives. We are confused by our emotions. We are confused by other people’s actions. We are confused by internal conflicts over right and wrong as well as conflicting societal messages. Even those things with a steadfast, never changing result can confuse us.

Or is it just me?
